Premier League: Newcastle floor Liverpool on opening weekend

Five minutes was all it took

Newcastle barely let the game settle. William Osula threaded it through inside five minutes and Anthony Elanga beat Alisson Becker. St James’ Park went up on the first weekend of the season.

Liverpool had the ball after that. Sixty-one per cent of it. Control without teeth. The Magpies sat off, soaked it up and went the other way in a hurry. Half-time arrived with nothing changed.

Three minutes flipped it twice

On 55 minutes, Ryan Gravenberch found Cody Gakpo and it was level. Liverpool finally had the game where they wanted it.

Three minutes. That is how long it lasted. Yoane Wissa squared for Joe Willock in the 58th and he did not hesitate. 2-1, and Matthias Jaissle’s side were back in front.

Andoni Iraola went to his bench, Alexis Mac Allister first, then Ronald Araujo. Nothing came of it. Alexander Isak had four attempts, two on target, and no way past. Big chances on the night: three for Newcastle, none for Liverpool.

Jaissle’s plan, executed to the letter

52,630 were in for the opener. Newcastle took the three points, Liverpool took nothing.

The last 10 minutes told you plenty. Virgil van Dijk was booked in the first minute of stoppage time, Fabian Schar four minutes after that. Frustration one end, clock management the other. Stuart Attwell ended it with the scoreline untouched for half an hour.

Iraola starts his campaign beaten at a ground that has rarely done him favours. Jaissle starts his with a win and a game plan that held up all afternoon.
