Premier League: Neville rips into Wirtz and Isak

“I want to kick him up the backside”

Gary Neville pulled no punches.

The former Manchester United defender went first at Florian Wirtz. “I want to kick him up the backside!” Then he moved on to Alexander Isak. Same verdict on both men: “too nice”.

And he kept coming back to the same blunt line to sum up how he feels about the Reds’ situation. “Enough is enough. Enough is enough.”

A point banked, but doubts left behind

The stage was St James’ Park on Sunday night. Liverpool scraped a 2-2 draw against Newcastle in the dying seconds.

One point on the board. Another story on the pitch. The Reds spent long spells on the back foot, and Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge ended up raising as many questions as it answered.

The money is in, but the returns are not

That gap is what is winding Neville up. Liverpool have spent heavily in recent years and the expected return still isn’t there. The attitude of their two attacking leaders is now being questioned in public, at a stage of the season when nobody really saw it coming.

Iraola, for his part, has only taken charge of one match.
