A Rough Start, Then Total Command
Ten-nothing. That’s where SMU stood early Saturday night, staring at a deficit built by a Missouri State field goal and, worse, a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Kevin Jennings needed an answer fast, and he found one in the form of the best half of football he’s played in a Mustangs uniform.
By the time the dust settled, No. 22 SMU had pulled away for a 34-24 win, and Jennings had rewritten a piece of program history. His 464 passing yards set a new career high. His 33 completions on 39 attempts, three touchdowns and one interception pushed him past the school mark for career completions and yards, a total that now sits at 722 completions for 9,162 yards.

Knight and Cooper Do the Heavy Lifting
Jennings didn’t do it alone. Yamir Knight hauled in 11 catches for 164 yards and a score, absorbing the bulk of the target share on a night when SMU simply outran its opponent’s coverage. Jalen Cooper added eight grabs for 125 yards. At one stretch, Jennings completed 21 passes in a row, the kind of run that turns a shaky opening into a laugher.
Kendrick Raphael chipped in on the ground, grinding out 98 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, giving SMU’s offense a two-way threat that Missouri State, a 30½-point underdog coming in, had no answer for. The final numbers tell the story on their own: 592 yards of total offense for SMU against 239 for the Bears.
Missouri State Fights, But Fades
Credit to Missouri State for making a game of it early. Skyler Locklear was efficient before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injury, going 15 of 19 for 102 yards and a touchdown, and that opening defensive score gave the Bears belief they had no business having against a team of this caliber.
SMU wasn’t clean. Twelve penalties for 106 yards and two turnovers led to 10 Missouri State points, sloppiness that will get cleaned up on tape this week. But Jennings’ arm covered for everything else, and the Mustangs improved to 3-1 with a statement that has nothing to do with the final score and everything to do with how comfortably they erased a 10-point hole.
