Charlotte arrive between two much bigger nights
Ole Miss play their home opener on Saturday night against Charlotte. The ninth-ranked Rebels then host Lane Kiffin and eighth-ranked LSU seven days later. Most of the stadium will be thinking about last week or next week rather than about the visitors.
Pete Golding has spent the week arguing that the timing works in his favour. Opening against a ranked opponent handed his squad honest tape. Week two, in his framing, is the week to fix yourself rather than scout somebody else.
“It doesn’t matter if we’re playing Louisville or Charlotte or Delta State,” Golding said, before returning to attention to detail and consistent execution.

What the opener exposed
The Rebels beat Louisville 41-38 in Nashville on Sunday night, Lucas Carneiro landing a 48-yard field goal as the clock expired. They trailed twice and drew level twice. They scored 31 points after the interval, having gone scoreless in the first quarter and led only 10-6 at the break.
Trinidad Chambliss threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. Deuce Alexander caught five balls for a career-best 159 yards and two scores.
The pattern bothers Golding more than the result pleases him. His offence absorbed early hits and answered after half-time. His defence did the reverse, landing blows early and taking them late. Getting both units to swing at the same time is the stated target for Saturday.
Charlotte come in on a ten-game slide
The 49ers lost their opener 43-41 at home to The Citadel, and it took three overtimes to get there. That stretched their losing run to ten matches, going back to a win over FCS side Monmouth last September. Charlotte finished 1-11 last season and 0-8 in the American.
Tim Albin wants urgency rather than panic, and cleaner execution from week one to week two. He is trying to stop one home defeat from defining the programme or the people inside it.
He also framed the trip to Oxford as part of the calendar rather than an ordeal. Every Group of 6 school plays at least one Power 4 opponent, and Ole Miss is Charlotte’s. He called it exposure, then said he wants a lot of things cleaned up.
The gap in the numbers is not subtle. Ole Miss put 41 points on a top-25 team on the opening weekend. Charlotte conceded 43 at home to an FCS opponent.
