Lebby sells preparation
Jeff Lebby has one Southeastern Conference win from last season to answer for. Mississippi State finished 5-8, and that single conference victory is the number following the programme into Saturday night’s opener against Louisiana Monroe in Starkville. Asked earlier today whether a team can be too ready for a first game, the Bulldogs coach said the idea does not exist in his head.
Confidence, he told reporters, is what preparation manufactures, and he wants it visible when his players walk down the ramp. It is a coach speaking to his own locker room as much as to the microphones, which is usually what a first week sounds like when the previous season went badly.

A quarterback with two starts and no wins
Kamario Taylor takes the first snap. He appeared in 11 games as a true freshman in 2025 and is 0-2 when handed the job, a thin sample that is still a real one. His most reliable outlet should be Anthony Evans III, who tied for third in the SEC with 67 catches and ranked 10th in receiving yards with 831. Those are numbers produced against conference defences in a year when very little else about Mississippi State worked.
The defence leans on safety Isaac Smith, fourth on the team with 64 tackles last season. Against a Sun Belt opponent that total matters less than it will in October, which is part of why openers like this one tell coaches so little.
ULM want the fire early
Louisiana Monroe arrive off a 3-9 campaign and carrying a scar from their last trip into the SEC, a 73-0 defeat at Alabama. Coach Bryant Vincent is not hiding from the comparison. Facing that kind of roster in week one, he said, tells his squad exactly what length, size and speed look like, and he called Mississippi State the most talented opponent the Warhawks will meet all season. He wants the stage.
He also has the more experienced quarterback. Aidan Armenta begins his second year as ULM’s starter after throwing for 1,629 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025, a body of work Taylor has not approached. Nic Trujillo returns as his known receiver, having caught 23 passes for 368 yards and four scores.
The gap between an SEC roster and a Sun Belt one is the whole story here, and that 73-0 line from Tuscaloosa says how wide it can open when a game gets away. Lebby’s counter is that his team will simply be ready for it.
