Eleven third downs, eleven stops
Washington State did not convert a third down on Sunday afternoon. Not one, in eleven tries. Everything else that happened in Seattle sits on top of that number.
No. 17 Washington opened its season with a 24-10 win over the Cougars in the Apple Cup. The Huskies defense held Washington State to 242 total yards and forced three turnovers. Jayden Limar ran in an 11-yard touchdown with 2:18 left to close it out.
Demond Williams Jr. finished 24 of 35 for 268 yards and a touchdown, and led the team in rushing with 61 yards on seven carries. The play that mattered came on third-and-9 from his own 33 with 2:33 on the clock. He scrambled for 21 and the Huskies kept the ball.

The Cougars kept handing it back
Jeron Jones picked off Caden Pinnick early in the second quarter and gave Washington the ball at the WSU 21. Five plays later Williams scored from five yards out for a 10-0 lead. On the next Cougars possession, Kirby Vorhees fumbled at his own 24 at the end of a four-yard run.
Pinnick still had his moments. He went 16 of 25 for 142 yards and matched Williams with 61 rushing yards, scoring on an 11-yard keeper up the middle with 10:15 left to make it 10-7. Washington answered on the very next drive with a 29-yard completion to Chris Lawson and a 44-yard flea flicker to Rashid Williams, then a one-yard scoring throw to the same receiver.
Kicks, and a headset
Jack Stevens got the Cougars back within 17-10 with a 42-yard field goal at 4:30, though he had already missed from 52 and 32. Tyler Robles opened the scoring for Washington from 48 yards and later pushed a 29-yarder wide left.
The worst of it for the Huskies came just before the break. They took over at their own 6 with 3:07 to go, drove to the Cougars’ one-yard line, and watched Keith Brown stop Limar short on the final play of the half. Jedd Fisch threw his headset. Two quarters later it did not matter.
