NCAA: UCLA beat Cal 45-24 but lose Iamaleava to injury

Knight scores three in his first game as a Bruin

UCLA won 45-24 at California overnight in Berkeley, and left the field with a quarterback problem.

Wayne Knight ran for three touchdowns in his UCLA debut. He scored from 8 yards in the second quarter, then from 31 yards and from 4 yards in the fourth. Anthony Woods added 118 rushing yards and two scores of his own, a 31-yarder in the second quarter and a 53-yard run late in the game.

The margin arrived in the final fifteen minutes. UCLA converted two interceptions into two touchdowns and the season opener stopped being a contest.

Ta’Shawn James breaks the game open

Both picks belonged to Ta’Shawn James, and both came off Jaron-Keawe Sagapoluetele. On one of them, UCLA’s rush pushed the Cal quarterback out of the pocket, his throw on the move glanced off receiver Ian Strong, and James collected it near midfield. Knight broke off his 31-yard run on the very next snap.

James intercepted Sagapoluetele a second time in the same quarter. UCLA answered with an eight-play, 46-yard drive that burned 4:03 and finished with Knight’s four-yard touchdown.

Sagapoluetele threw for 271 yards on 24 of 41 attempts and had Cal in decent shape for a half. He capped an 11-play, 75-yard opening drive with a 9-yard touchdown to Chase Hendricks, then found Mason Mini from 8 yards just before the interval, after a 49-yard completion to Strong moved the ball.

Nico Iamaleava leaves on one leg

The cost came during that eight-play drive. Nico Iamaleava scrambled, got dragged down by the leg, and came up limping. He watched the rest of the possession from the sideline. His younger brother Madden Iamaleava replaced him and did not attempt a pass.

Iamaleava finished 14 of 22 for 184 yards with one interception, taken by Kingston Lopa. UCLA offered no update on his right leg after the game, which leaves the Bruins opening their season with a win and an unanswered question at the position that matters most.
