Nine thousand bets
The number comes straight out of court filings. More than 9,000 sports bets. At least $90,000 staked. All of it during a college career that started at Indiana, ran through Cincinnati, and ended with a January transfer to Texas Tech.
At least 40 of those wagers were on Indiana football games, placed while he was still wearing the Hoosiers uniform.
Brendan Sorsby paid for it with his college career. His old school walks away clean.
Cincinnati announced Wednesday that the NCAA enforcement staff had closed the case. No penalty for the program, none for the coaches, none for any other athlete. “All penalties tied to this violation are attached to the student-athlete, not the institution,” the school said.

Level III, the bottom rung of the rulebook
The NCAA filed it as a Level III violation. That category is meant for isolated or limited breaches. Given the sums, the label reads generously.
Sorsby placed at least 165 bets during his Cincinnati stretch. Count every leg of every parlay and the number climbs to roughly 500 individual stakes. Money down in that window: at least $38,000.
The most uncomfortable date for the school is August 2024. Sorsby tripped an alert in Cincinnati’s betting-integrity monitoring system while trying to wager on a UFC fight. Compliance called him in, questioned him, ran him through extra NCAA rules training, and that was that.
That episode is what fueled the suspicion over the summer. Ron Slavin, the player’s agent, said in June that the school had known for two years. Cincinnati denied it. The NCAA has now sided with the university.
And now, a million-dollar bill
Sorsby did not go quietly. He sued the NCAA in Texas state court, won back his eligibility on a temporary injunction, then dropped the case.
Next he tried to reach the NFL through the supplemental draft. The league did not hold one this year. He waits until 2027.
One fight is still open. Cincinnati and Sorsby are arguing over a $1 million buyout clause tied to his Texas Tech move. The sporting case is closed. The check has not been written.
