Who would have guessed before the playoffs that Jalen Duren would be looking for a trade at free agency? Not many, that is for sure… Yet that is exactly where things stand, with the Pistons big man frustrated by the team’s offers and now weighing up a fresh start after meetings with the Kings and Lakers today.

According to Chris Haynes at Prime Video, Duren wants to explore a sign-and-trade to get out of Detroit. The young center is already set for a first meeting with the Sacramento Kings, before also talking to another well-known California outfit: the Los Angeles Lakers.
It is a surprising situation for a player who looked like the future of the Pistons. Drafted 13th in 2022, Jalen Duren quickly made himself at home in Detroit’s paint. But now the mood has changed. He is reportedly unhappy with the offers on the table, opening the door to a possible exit.
The market is heating up
The timing is interesting. Duren has just come off the best season of his young career. In a Pistons team that shocked plenty by finishing with the best record in the Eastern Conference, the center took a big step forward. He averaged 19,5 points, 10,5 rebounds and 2 assists in 70 games, establishing himself as one of the league’s most promising young big men. His efficiency stood out too, shooting 65 % from the field. That progress was rewarded with a first All-Star nod and a place on the All-NBA Third Team.
That said, what has the front office worried is Duren’s playoff form. He posted miserable numbers compared with the regular season, putting up 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Those poor performances were part of the reason the Pistons crashed out in the playoffs.
In those games, Duren was invisible, had little impact and was even benched late in games for Paul Reed, who looked far sharper than he did. That is the real trigger here. The Pistons are worried Duren could repeat that kind of production if Detroit gets back to the playoffs, which is why the offers were lowered. Unsurprisingly, the big man was not impressed.

Among the interested teams, Sacramento seems especially active. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, a potential deal could even send Domantas Sabonis back to Detroit. The exact shape of that scenario is still very murky, but the idea shows the Kings mean business. After building their identity around pace and offence, Sacramento may be looking to add more size and vertical pop inside.

Duren fits that brief perfectly: young, explosive, able to finish at the rim, clean the glass and give a bit more protection in the paint. For Detroit, bringing back a proven player like Sabonis could be a way to reshape the roster quickly around its playoff ambitions.
The Lakers want to bolster their frontcourt too
Sacramento are not the only team in the hunt. The Los Angeles Lakers are also keeping a close eye on the situation. Still according to The Athletic, Duren is set to speak with the California franchise on Tuesday. It is an interest that comes as Los Angeles keeps searching for a long-term answer in the paint.

DeAndre Ayton did activate his player option worth 8,1 million dollars for the 2026-2027 season, but that does not appear to have stopped the Lakers from keeping their options open for a big man who can bring real physical presence. In Los Angeles, the thinking is simple: support the stars already in place and build a roster that can compete right away.

The question now is a straightforward one: are the Pistons ready to make Jalen Duren one of their cornerstones for the years ahead? The talent is obvious. So is the upside. But in an NBA where every dollar matters, teams have to be ruthless about who gets paid big.
