NBA : Quinten Post signs 3 years with the Grizzlies

Nobody really saw this one coming. Taken almost out of nowhere with the 52nd pick in the 2024 Draft, Quinten Post looked set for a quiet role with the Golden State Warriors. Two years on, he is now at the centre of a case that could shape the California franchise’s offseason.

According to Shams Charania, the Dutch centre has signed a three-year, $30 million offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies. Now the ball is in Golden State’s court. The Warriors have until Tuesday night to match the deal and keep their big man. If they do not, Post is heading for Tennessee.

From low-key pick to sought-after big man

Quinten Post is the sort of story the NBA loves. No hype machine, no franchise saviour nonsense, just a second-round pick labelled as a project. Yet over time, he has carved out a real place in Steve Kerr’s rotation.

He has done it without much fuss. Whenever his number has been called, Post has answered. In 67 games last season, he averaged 7.7 points and 4 rebounds in just over 17 minutes a night. Nothing flashy, sure. Enough to get rival front offices paying attention, though.

What stands out most is the fit. At 2.13 metres, Post gives teams something NBA clubs love: a big who can stretch the floor without clogging the paint. He has hit 36.4% from deep since entering the league, which makes him the kind of stretch five plenty of teams spend all summer chasing.

Memphis makes its move

For the Grizzlies, the plan is obvious. Rather than throwing money at the biggest names on the market, Memphis is targeting a player still on the rise, one with a modern skill set and a deal that still looks sensible by today’s NBA standards.

By putting forward this offer sheet, the Grizzlies are also turning up the heat on Golden State. Either the Warriors match and keep their centre, or Memphis lands a 26-year-old big man whose best basketball still feels ahead of him.

Over the next few days, Quinten Post’s future will not be in his hands. It will depend on how much faith Golden State is willing to show him. And sometimes, it is decisions like this, away from the superstar circus and the headline-grabbing trades, that end up mattering most to a franchise’s success.
