A record that stood since 2017
Atlanta did not just beat Charlotte on Friday night. It flattened the Hornets 128-81, a 47-point margin that is the largest win in Hawks history. The old mark was 46, set in a 126-80 rout of Sacramento on Nov. 15, 2017.
The game was settled long before the final quarter. The Hawks carried a 97-62 lead into the fourth, and the starters had nothing left to prove by then. Jalen Johnson and Aaron Wiggins each scored 19. Nickeil Alexander-Walker put up 14, CJ McCollum 13 and Corey Kispert 11. Dyson Daniels did his damage elsewhere, finishing with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals.

Charlotte’s home opener comes apart
The Hornets gave the ball away 27 times, and Atlanta turned that sloppiness into a runaway. It was a sharp drop for a Charlotte team that had won at Brooklyn two nights earlier and arrived in front of its own fans with some momentum.
Naz Reid led the home side with 17 points. Grayson Allen and Tidjane Salaun scored 11 apiece. Reid and Allen were playing their first home game in Hornets colors, and it was not the welcome either of them wanted.
Atlanta moves to 2-0. Charlotte is 1-1 and will have to clean up its ball security quickly, because a night like this one leaves no room for argument about what went wrong.
