Nikola Jokic’s deal
The Denver Nuggets have been knocked out by the Minnesota Timberwolves. That exit came in the first round of the playoffs. The front office is already looking ahead to next season. Nikola Jokic is the only player certain to stay. Denver want to extend his deal this summer.
The Serbian star’s current contract runs through 2027. He also holds a player option for 2028. The new financial package is valued at $290 million. It would cover four years. Jokic has already said publicly that he intends to stay with the team.
Denver’s roster overhaul
The front office is ready to listen to trade offers. Everyone else on the roster is in play. Last year’s moves haven’t paid off. The Michael Porter Jr. for Cam Johnson swap did nothing to raise the team’s level. The arrivals of Tim Hardaway Jr, Bruce Brown and Jonas Valanciunas had very little impact in the series against Minnesota.
Cam Johnson’s contract runs out next year. Jonas Valanciunas is not fully guaranteed. That gives Colorado plenty of room to reshuffle a big chunk of the group.
Try it for $0.99.
The budget and the coaching job
Denver’s finances are tight. Christian Braun’s salary jumps sharply. It rises from $5 to $21.5 million per season. Aaron Gordon’s pay also goes up by $10 million. The front office wants to keep Peyton Watson. His current deal has expired.
Aaron Gordon is the tricky one. He is 30. The injuries keep piling up. A trade is being weighed up by the team. As for the head coach, there will be no change. David Adelman will still be in charge of the franchise next season.
