Bases loaded, one out, one swing
Ten innings. Bases loaded. One out. Josh Naylor lined a single to center field, and the Seattle Mariners had their 6-5 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night. For most of the game, that ending looked far from guaranteed.
Houston led 4-0 before the third inning finished. Jose Altuve opened it with a single that deflected off the umpire’s shin, Yordan Alvarez doubled him into scoring position, and Yainer Diaz turned the corner with a two-run homer. Seattle answered immediately, scoring three of its own in the bottom half through Dominic Canzone and Julio Rodriguez, then tied it 4-4 in the fifth when Randy Arozarena stole second and scored on another Canzone single.

A pattern this roster keeps leaning on
This is not new territory for Seattle. The Mariners have needed extra innings and situational contact hitting more than once down the stretch this September, a departure from the long-ball identity that carried the franchise for most of the decade. Canzone finished with three RBIs on the night, matching a season high, while starter George Kirby allowed four runs across five innings before handing the game to a bullpen that bent without breaking.
Diaz nearly finished it for Houston in the 10th, ripping a go-ahead triple off closer Josh Hader. Hader then walked in the tying run before Naylor delivered the winning single. He took the loss despite recording the first two outs of the frame, a reminder of how thin the margins get once a bullpen game reaches its third or fourth arm.
Long odds, still alive
The scoreboard math barely moves. Seattle sits at 74-84, four games back of the mark Houston and Texas both hold at 78-80, the two teams the Mariners would need to catch, and ideally tie together, for their playoff path to open at all. Wednesday does not change that picture much. What it does is give this roster another extra-inning rep in a season that has forced plenty of them, whether or not October ever arrives.
