A lawn sprinkler, handed over in Valdebebas
The press conference was almost done when an Italian reporter walked up to Jose Mourinho and gave him a garden sprinkler. Real Madrid’s manager did not need it explained.
The clip was everywhere within minutes.
The reference goes back to Camp Nou in 2010. Inter had just eliminated Barcelona on their way to the final, and as Mourinho’s players celebrated on the pitch, the sprinklers came on. Sixteen years later, people still bring it up.
Try it for $0.99.
Inter come to the Bernabeu on Tuesday
The gift was not random. Real Madrid open their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan, the club Mourinho took to the treble in 2010.
That season is still the peak of his career, and the Barcelona semi-final is the night everyone remembers from it. Which is exactly what the Italian press wanted back in circulation a day before kickoff.
Mourinho has never needed help generating that sort of noise.
Betis got there first
Madrid’s season had been going along fine until Friday, when they lost 1-0 at Betis. First proper stumble.
Now Europe starts, against a squad and a club that know their manager as well as anyone in football knows him.
Tuesday is the first night that will actually tell us something about Mourinho’s Madrid. The sprinkler will not help.
