Why KTM went for Marini
KTM will line up four new riders in 2027, and the last piece fell into place with Luca Marini. Motorsports director Pit Beirer, speaking to MotoGP pit lane reporter Jack Appleyard at Aragon, said the Italian made his interest known early and that the people around him vouched for his ability to develop a bike.
Marini is in his second season as a factory HRC rider. He moves to Tech3, where he is expected to partner rookie Senna Agius. Alex Marquez and Fabio di Giannantonio are already locked in at the factory Red Bull KTM squad, which means every RC16 on the grid next year will be ridden by someone who spent 2026 somewhere else.
Beirer said the split at Tech3 was deliberate. KTM wanted one experienced rider alongside one young one, and he was blunt that the satellite squad is not a rookies team. That ruled out pairing two newcomers, whatever the long-term arithmetic might have suggested.

A technical reset dressed up as a rider market
The timing is not accidental. The 2027 season brings 850cc engines and a switch to Pirelli tyres, the deepest technical reset MotoGP has attempted since the class went from 800cc to 1000cc in 2012. Every manufacturer starts that transition with a blank sheet, and development feedback becomes the currency that decides who gets it right first.
That is where Marini earns his money. His reputation as a development rider followed him from Ducati machinery at VR46 to Honda, and Beirer said the riders already signed for next year were pleased when they heard he was coming. He described the combination of new faces and new rules as a chance to restart the project.
“I think this is really good energy filling up for the future,” Beirer said.
The riders heading the other way
Tech3’s current line-up empties out. Enea Bastianini moves to Trackhouse Aprilia. Maverick Vinales, who is sitting out Misano to keep treating a shoulder injury, looks set to leave the grid altogether after KTM test rider Pol Espargaro stood in for him at Silverstone.
Marini gets a factory-supported bike in a project that has spent 2026 hunting for direction. Whether that counts as a promotion depends entirely on what the RC16 turns into once the 850s arrive.
