Six years become nine at Portimao
The Algarve International Circuit will keep MotoGP through 2029, extending an arrangement that began in 2020 and has since become one of the calendar’s more durable partnerships. AIA chief executive Jaime Costa framed the renewal in plain terms: “The continuity of MotoGP for another three years ensures that Portugal and the Algarve reinforce their place on the map of major world sporting events.”
The numbers back up the confidence. Miguel Oliveira won the inaugural Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020, giving the circuit a home hero from its very first weekend in the championship. Five years later, attendance had grown to more than 166,000 spectators across the 2025 race weekend, a figure that puts Portimao among the better-attended stops on a calendar that now spans four continents.

A track built for three classes
MotoGP Group deputy chief executive Carlos Ezpeleta pointed to the layout itself as the reason riders keep coming back. “The demanding layout has provided unforgettable races and has quickly become a favourite of riders and fans,” he said. The Algarve circuit hosts all three grand prix classes, MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3, and the 2026 edition is scheduled for November 20-22, positioning it as one of the final rounds of the season rather than an early-year fixture.
Portuguese officials are treating the extension as more than a sporting footnote. Secretary of State for Tourism Pedro Machado called the deal “a sign of confidence in the country’s future and Portuguese tourism,” language that reflects how thoroughly the race weekend has folded into the region’s broader economic calendar.
A rare long-term commitment
Three-year extensions are not the norm on a calendar where several venues negotiate year to year, or lose their date entirely once a rights holder finds a bigger bid elsewhere. Locking in Portimao through 2029 gives MotoGP a settled Western European anchor late in the season, at a track whose short six-year history has already produced a home winner, a record crowd, and now a contract that outlasts most of the current grid’s own deals.
