Three saves in 13 minutes, then nothing
Montreal started like a side that actually fancied it. Second minute: Radojevic forces Nico Hansen into action. 10th: Prince Owusu has a go. 13th: Dante Sealy keeps the pressure on.
The Colorado keeper stopped everything. Seven clean sheets this season, and another one tonight in Commerce City. Five saves in all.
CF Montreal left with a 1-0 defeat ringing in their ears.
Try it for $0.99.
The penalty that changed everything
41st minute. Donavan Phillip drifts wide, cuts into the six-yard box and is brought down by Viktor Radojevic. The referee points to the spot.
Paxten Aaronson takes his time. A stuttering run-up. Sebastian Breza goes right. The ball goes left. Sixth goal of the season for the American, who has scored in back-to-back matches.
A minute earlier, Montreal had come agonisingly close. Keegan Rosenberry, from a set piece, picked out Rob Holding in the gap. The defender’s header came back off the bar.
A season dragging on
Breza did his part. Five saves from him, too. A strong hand on 70 minutes to keep out a low strike from Hamzat Ojediran, then a fingertip touch on Wayne Frederick’s follow-up. On 75 minutes, he was there again to deny Aaronson.
It still wasn’t enough. Montreal are now 5 wins, 14 defeats and 6 draws, with 21 points on the board. Bottom of the Eastern Conference and well adrift.
Colorado (11-12-2, 35 points) can breathe a little easier. Nothing fancy, just the three points.
Darren Yapi had already tried an improvised backheel on 17 minutes after a loose touch, forcing Breza to dive and claim it. In the end, not one Montreal shot found the net. At this rate, that hardly comes as a surprise.
