A sprained thumb changes the infield
Jazz Chisholm Jr. slid head first into second base in the eighth inning on Tuesday and came up with a sprained right thumb. He goes to the 10-day injured list and will be shut down from baseball activity for seven to 10 days.
The timing is what stings in New York. Chisholm was hitting .391 over his previous 15 games, 18 hits in 46 at-bats, the best stretch of his season.
“I feel like he has been really putting together some of his best at-bats of the season for an extended stretch,” Aaron Boone said on Wednesday. “So definitely a blow, but hopefully one that the time down here hopefully gets this thing right and puts us in position to impact us moving forward.”
Jose Caballero started at second base on Wednesday. Anthony Volpe is expected to come up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Chisholm’s roster spot, and he could split time at the position.

Volpe rebuilt himself in the minors
The numbers behind the move are blunt. Volpe hit .240 with one home run and 19 RBIs across 56 games at shortstop before George Lombard Jr. took the job from him on August 4. Since being optioned, he has hit .295 with 10 home runs and 21 RBIs in 27 games.
“I feel like he’s in a really good spot,” Boone said. “He’s been really productive down there and playing really well. He has taken well to the other positions. So we’ll see.”
Lombard supplied the headline on Wednesday with his first career grand slam in the third inning of a 6-1 win. Aaron Judge went 2-for-7 across his first two games back from a fractured rib and may sit out on Thursday night.
Colorado are running out of season
The Rockies sit at 55-90 and need eight wins from their final 17 games to avoid a fourth consecutive 100-loss year. They are also trying to stop a run of six straight road defeats.
Will Warren held them to one run and four hits over six innings on Wednesday. “He put his fastball where he wanted to. We didn’t have an answer for him,” Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer said.
Every Rockies run in this series has arrived by home run, through Connor Norby, Hunter Goodman and Adael Amador. Colorado have struck out 24 times across the three games and are hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Max Fried starts for the Yankees at 4-4 with a 2.73 ERA, still building his pitch count back after a bone bruise in his left elbow. Ryan Feltner takes the ball for Colorado carrying a 5.91 ERA and faces New York for the first time.
