Last night, in his first game back in a Yankees uniform since that demotion, he launched a grand slam.
Three hits in four at-bats. Five RBIs, a career high. And it all came during a six-run seventh inning that put the game to bed. New York rolled past the Colorado Rockies 10-3.
Volpe had been called back up to cover second base while Jazz Chisholm Jr. nurses a right thumb strain.

The Yankees keep rolling, the Rockies keep sinking
A three-game sweep for New York. The Yankees are now three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays at the top of the American League East. They also hold a four-and-a-half-game cushion over Boston in the race for the league’s top wild card spot.
That’s eight wins in their last 11.
Luis Garcia Jr. belted a two-run homer off starter Ryan Feltner. His 30th of the season. It’s the first time in his career he’s reached that mark.
Colorado, meanwhile, have now lost 10 of their last 13 and sit at 55-91. Kyle Karros homered, Jake McCarthy had two hits including an RBI triple, and Ezequiel Tovar added two hits and a run.
Elsewhere on the night
Atlanta broke through against Tampa Bay in the eighth inning. Three runs, including a two-run single from Ha-Seong Kim, after being held to two hits through seven. The final score was 3-1, and Raisel Iglesias picked up his 32nd save.
Houston nicked a win in Philadelphia, 2-1, on Cam Smith’s ninth-inning homer off Jhoan Duran. Smith has scored in every game of the series. Zack Wheeler, though, had gone seven strong, allowing one run and striking out nine. The Phillies have slipped four games behind the Braves in the National League East.
Seattle beat Texas 4-3. Julio Rodriguez flipped it with a three-run homer in the seventh. Logan Gilbert struck out 11 across seven innings. Jacob deGrom, for his part, had retired the first 15 hitters he faced before his bullpen cracked.
Pittsburgh blanked Chicago 2-0. Jared Jones threw seven innings and allowed just one hit. Oneil Cruz went 3-for-4 with a homer. It was the Pirates’ first road sweep of the season, while the White Sox have seen their lead in the American League Central shrink to one and a half games over Cleveland.
