Jazz Chisholm Jr. gives the Yankees a lift: deGrom had no answer
Jazz Chisholm Jr. took his time enjoying it. Arms locked, eyes fixed on the ball soaring toward right-center, the tireless Yankee finally let out the tension. His go-ahead homer against the fearsome Jacob deGrom sent New York to a 7-4 win over the Rangers on Tuesday night. “About time!” Chisholm said after the game. With 15 wins in their last 17 games, the Yankees are playing with a swagger bordering on arrogance, and they sit atop the American League at 25-11.
A power show at Yankee Stadium
If Chisholm stole the spotlight with his 413-foot missile off a 98 mph fastball, he was far from the only one putting on a show. Ryan McMahon and Paul Goldschmidt also went deep. Even when the Rangers manager chose to issue an intentional walk to Aaron Judge to load the bases, the move blew up in his face: Cody Bellinger promptly ripped a two-run double. For Goldschmidt, it was proof this team does not lean on one or two stars, but on a brutal collective effort.

The “Enter Strandman” bullpen makes history
In front of legend Mariano Rivera, who was in the stands, the Yankees’ relief corps pulled off a small miracle. For just the second time since 1961, New York’s relievers inherited eight baserunners and did not allow a single one to score. Brent Headrick was outstanding, fanning four straight batters, while David Bednar slammed the door for his 10th save. “They made a mistake giving the team MVP belt to the bullpen, and they are in no hurry to hand it back,” Bednar joked after the game.
A brighter future still for New York
Despite a shaky start from rookie Elmer Rodriguez, who still got through four and two-thirds innings before being sent back to Triple-A, the news is good for the rotation. Carlos Rodon is close to being activated, and ace Gerrit Cole could be back on the mound before the end of the month. With the best ERA among major league starters already, the return of those two pillars could leave the rest of the league in a cold sweat. The pinstripes train does not look like stopping any time soon.
