Hernandez ends it in the ninth
Seven pitches. That is how long Teoscar Hernandez made Dodger Stadium wait before he drove a sinker from Riley O’Brien into the left-center gap overnight, scoring two and beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2.
Tommy Edman started the rally with a one-out single, his fourth hit of the night against the club that traded him. Mookie Betts drew a walk behind him. Hernandez took care of the rest, and Los Angeles had a sixth walk-off win this season instead of a third straight loss.
Edman has punished St. Louis all week. Eight hits in 15 at-bats across the three games, batting leadoff Thursday with Shohei Ohtani given the night off to rest a neck, a biceps and a knee.

Skubal survives a night of singles
Tarik Skubal never looked comfortable. The Cardinals collected 10 hits off him, every one a single, tying the most he has allowed in a start in his career. He lasted 5 2/3 innings before Dave Roberts came to get him, the first time since a five-inning outing against Kansas City on Aug. 11 that he failed to finish six.
St. Louis got its runs the same way, stringing together two-out singles from Leo Bernal and Ramon Urias in the third to bring Ivan Herrera home. Jordan Walker’s double off Evan Phillips in the seventh was the only extra-base hit the Cardinals managed all night.
Los Angeles nearly wasted all of it. Rookie Quinn Mathews kept escaping, and the one run the Dodgers scratched off him came on a wild pitch that skipped past Herrera with Freddie Freeman at the plate. Loading the bases in the eighth against George Soriano produced nothing when Dalton Rushing struck out. Across their last two games the Dodgers went 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position.
What it changes
Brock Stewart picked up the win, O’Brien the loss. Los Angeles and Atlanta now sit four games behind Milwaukee for the best record in the National League, with the Braves holding the tiebreaker after sweeping the Dodgers in their own building.
Washington arrives Friday for three games. Jackson Kent faces Blake Snell to open it.
