Cincinnati flips a four-run hole
Sean Burke had the White Sox halfway to a statement win. Through seven innings the right-hander struck out eight and held Cincinnati to a single run on three hits and no walks. Then the bullpen let it slip.
The Reds erased a four-run deficit and beat Chicago 5-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday, with Elly De La Cruz driving in the go-ahead run in the top of the frame. The comeback snapped a three-game losing streak that had started to weigh on Cincinnati’s summer.

De La Cruz decides it, Pagan finishes it
De La Cruz remains the player Cincinnati leans on, and this was the latest example. His run-scoring at-bat in the 10th broke the tie, and the back of the bullpen handled the rest.
Brock Burke retired the side in a perfect ninth to earn the win and move to 5-4. Emilio Pagan followed with a 1-2-3 10th for his 14th save, a clean close on a night the Reds could not afford a loose one.
Lodolo shakes off the rust
The subplot was Nick Lodolo. Making his first start after a month sidelined by a finger blister, the left-hander gave up four runs on five hits across four innings, digging the hole he would not have to answer for. The offense covered him.
Chicago, which had won its previous two games, watched a strong start go to waste. For Cincinnati, a comeback on the road is the sort of win that steadies a team after a rough stretch.
