MLB: Lombard, 21, slams the Yankees past Colorado

George Lombard Jr. batted with the bases loaded in the third inning overnight in the Bronx and cleared them. The rookie’s grand slam off Tomoyuki Sugano accounted for most of a 6-1 New York Yankees win over the Colorado Rockies.

Lombard is 21 years and 99 days old. Only Mickey Mantle has hit a grand slam at a younger age in a Yankees uniform. It was also the first grand slam any Yankee had hit all season.

Warren makes the lead stand

Will Warren took it from there. The right-hander worked six innings, allowed four hits and a single run, and improved to 10-6. New York have won five of their last seven.

Sugano matched him for length without matching him for damage. The Colorado starter also went six innings, gave up five runs on four hits and fell to 12-9. Four of those runs came on one pitch.

Colorado lose a third in a row

Connor Norby homered and added a double for the Rockies, who scored once and have now lost three straight. Colorado never threatened after the third and finished the night with little beyond Norby’s two hits.
