MLB: Jose Ramirez and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 11-1

MLB: Jose Ramirez drives in four in Guardians rout

Cleveland breaks it open early

Rain pushed first pitch back 30 minutes. Cleveland needed less time than that to take the game away.

Kansas City actually led. Salvador Perez singled home a two-out run in the top of the first. Parker Messick then struck out Nick Loftin with runners on the corners, and that was the last thing the Royals got right.

The Guardians answered with three in the bottom half. Jose Ramirez lifted a sacrifice fly, then Nathaniel Lowe drove an opposite-field two-run homer just over the left field wall, his 15th of the year. Cleveland went on to win 11-1 and salvage the finale of the three-game series.

Ramirez reaches 1,000 hits

Ramirez finished with a home run and four RBIs. His two-run shot to right in the fourth pushed the lead to 9-1. It was his 11th of the season and his first since June 6.

The bigger number came two innings later. Ramirez singled home a run in the sixth for the 1,000th hit of his career.

Lowe added a sacrifice fly and three RBIs in all. Jo Adell went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, including a bases-loaded two-run double in the third. Chase DeLauter was perfect at 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Steven Kwan reached twice in three trips and scored three times.

Messick cruises, Lugo gets hammered

Messick gave up that first-inning run and nothing after it. Six innings, five hits, two walks, five strikeouts. His record moved to 11-8.

Seth Lugo had no such afternoon. The Royals starter allowed nine runs on nine hits in three and two-thirds innings, walking two and striking out two. He falls to 6-8.

Kansas City had been rolling before this one. The loss was only their second in 14 games. Cleveland scored in four separate innings, three runs at a time in the first, third and fourth, then two more in the sixth to finish it.
