A slow roller ends it
Shay Whitcomb did not need to square one up. The Cardinals had their infield drawn in, one out, the automatic runner standing on third. Whitcomb chopped a high hopper toward deep shortstop and Nate Furman walked home with the run that gave the San Francisco Giants a 5-4 win over St. Louis in the bottom of the 11th overnight.
Drew Cavanaugh had bunted Furman over an out earlier. Jason Foley (3-1) did the harder work in the top half, stranding the Cardinals’ free runner and keeping the game level. George Soriano (6-4) wore the loss after being handed the 11th.
Both clubs cashed in their automatic runner in the 10th, Leo Bernal for St. Louis and Bryce Eldridge for the Giants. Before that, the visitors had crawled level in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Jose Fermin.

Webb finds himself again
Logan Webb had been battered lately. Sixteen runs in 10 2/3 innings across his previous three starts, the kind of stretch that follows a pitcher around. He carried a two-hit shutout into the sixth on Monday night before Alec Burleson pulled his 22nd homer of the season into the bay with two outs.
That was all Webb gave up. Six innings, three hits, one run, two walks, eight strikeouts, 99 pitches. Michael McGreevy answered with 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball for St. Louis, only two of those runs earned.
Eldridge drove in three with a double, a single and a sacrifice fly. Rafael Devers doubled twice, walked twice, scored once and knocked one in. Turner Hill crossed the plate twice. Thomas Saggese collected a pair of singles for the Cardinals and Burleson scored twice.
The Cardinals cannot afford this
St. Louis sits at 72-73 and five games behind Arizona for the final National League playoff place. The nine-game western trip opened with two wins over the Dodgers and has since drifted to 4-3. Losing an extra-inning game to a 60-85 team, in the first of six meetings between these clubs over the next 10 days, is the sort of night that decides Septembers.
The Giants have nothing left to chase. They can still make the schedule miserable for someone who does.
