Arizona Diamondbacks batter connects during win over San Diego Padres

MLB: Tawa’s homer powers Diamondbacks past Padres

One swing settled it

Tim Tawa picked the right moment. His three-run homer in the fourth inning Monday night carried the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field, the opener of a 10-game homestand against National League West rivals.

The sequence built fast. Ketel Marte drew a leadoff walk from Michael King. One out later, Adrian Del Castillo singled. Then Tawa turned on a pitch and drove it out for his fifth home run of the season. Arizona never trailed again.

Tawa finished with three of the Diamondbacks’ nine hits, a night’s work that cracked a tight game open.

Pfaadt sets the tone

Brandon Pfaadt did the rest. The right-hander carried a shutout into the seventh inning and picked up the win to move to 6-1, keeping San Diego off balance from the first pitch. King took the loss for the Padres.

Arizona piled on in the eighth. James McCann doubled home a run and Jorge Barrosa lifted a sacrifice fly against Wandy Peralta, pushing the margin to four and shutting the door on any late San Diego push.

Wild-card math shifts

The result moved the Diamondbacks two games clear of the Padres in the NL wild-card race, a real gap this deep into the schedule. Nine games remain on the homestand for Arizona to press the advantage.
