Four runs, and Abbott was gone
Andrew Abbott had allowed one run in six innings. Then the seventh started and none of it held.
Tim Tawa singled to lead off. Jordan Lawlar singled behind him. James McCann drew a four-pitch walk, and that was the end of Abbott’s afternoon in Phoenix. Luis Mey came in to face pinch hitter Lars Nootbaar, who rolled a slow groundout back to the mound that brought Tawa home. Ildemaro Vargas came next and hit a hard grounder past second base against a drawn-in infield. The ball rolled all the way to the wall in right-center. Two runs scored.
Corbin Carroll’s sacrifice fly brought Vargas in behind them. Arizona 5, Cincinnati 3, after trailing by three.

Six relievers, six scoreless innings
Mitch Bratt gave Arizona three innings and not much comfort: five hits, three runs, three walks. Everything after that belonged to the bullpen, and the bullpen gave up nothing. Six relievers combined for six scoreless innings. Jonathan Loaisiga worked the seventh and took the win to move to 5-3.
Kevin Ginkel came on with two outs in the ninth and a runner at first, then had to pitch around a fielding error by Vargas. He got Tyler Stephenson looking for his second save of the season. It was Arizona’s 39th comeback win of the year, and their third win in four games.
The wild-card math did not move
Arizona sit at 69-62. Philadelphia are 73-58, San Diego 71-62, and all three won on Sunday, so the standings closed the day exactly as they opened it. Two National League wild-card places remain open and the Diamondbacks did not lose ground on either club chasing them.
Carroll started the climb back in the sixth with a triple off the center-field fence, scoring on Gabriel Moreno’s sacrifice fly. That was his 16th triple of the season. No other player in the majors has more than seven.
Cincinnati built their lead in the third and had every reason to think it would hold. Elly De La Cruz doubled to open the inning and scored when Sal Stewart went the other way to right. Dane Myers doubled, then Eugenio Suarez punched a two-run single through for 3-0. Stewart’s RBI took him to 98 for the season, the most in baseball. The Reds have now lost four of six.
