Two innings were enough
Drew Gilbert turned on the fifth pitch of the night for a ground-rule double. Rafael Devers singled two pitches later. San Francisco had the lead before Cincinnati’s starter had settled, and by the end of the second inning the game was already decided.
Jung Hoo Lee brought in the first run with a single. Turner Hill doubled Devers home behind him. In the second, Christian Koss singled, Gilbert doubled again, and Devers crushed his 27th home run of the season for a 5-0 lead. Those five runs were the whole of the San Francisco offence overnight. The Giants never needed a sixth.
Chase Burns arrived at 14-3. He left after 3 2/3 innings having given up five runs and nine hits, both matching his worst of the season. One walk, five strikeouts, and a night he will want back.

Whisenhunt exits, five arms cover
Carson Whisenhunt should have been the man who profited from all that. Instead the left-hander felt pain in his forearm after retiring Sal Stewart for the second out of the third. A trainer walked to the mound. Whisenhunt walked off, his line reading 2 2/3 innings, two hits and three strikeouts.
Jason Foley closed out the third for his first win of the year. Reiver Sanmartin, Ryan Walker, Carson Seymour and Dylan Smith split the rest, six and a third innings of three-hit relief between them. Eleven strikeouts across the staff, and a tenth shutout of the season for San Francisco.
The win snapped a four-game losing run and opened a week-long homestand.
Cincinnati leave with nothing
The Reds managed five hits. None of them went for extra bases. Tyler Stephenson collected two, and the visitors were out-hit 10-5 across the evening.
Their bullpen did the job, with Sam Moll, Julian Garcia and Emilio Pagan combining for four and a third scoreless innings, but the arithmetic was fixed by the second. Cincinnati have now lost three of four on a nine-game trip, and they did it to a team they had beaten in a series at home earlier this season.
