MLB: Cubs get Matt Shaw back from the injured list

Two months on the shelf

The Chicago Cubs activated Matt Shaw from the injured list on Friday. The utility man had been out since June 29, when a sprained left hand cut off his run of everyday work.

Shaw, 24, was hitting .246 with four home runs and 20 RBIs across 56 games before the injury. Chicago took him in the first round of the 2023 draft and has used him around the infield and the outfield since.

His rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa ran five games. He went 6-for-19 with four RBIs, a .316 clip that gave the club enough to work with.

Alcantara pays for the roster spot

To clear room, Chicago optioned outfielder Kevin Alcantara to Iowa. Alcantara, also 24, hit .240 with one home run and six RBIs in 24 games for the Cubs this season.

The timing matters. Shaw returns with about a month of regular season left, and Chicago gets back a bat it can drop into several spots without reshaping the rest of the lineup.
