MLB: Bryce Eldridge’s four RBIs salvage a split for Giants

Bryce Eldridge matched career highs with four hits and four RBIs overnight as the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 to split Saturday’s doubleheader at Oracle Park. Arizona had taken the opener 7-1.

Rafael Devers drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Osleivis Basabe scored twice. The Giants closed out a 4-3 homestand and handed Arizona only their third defeat in 13 meetings this season.

Game 2 followed a number-retirement ceremony for Jeff Kent and turned into a duel between rookie pitchers. It stayed 1-1 through four and a half innings.

The fifth inning cracked it open

San Francisco ended Mitch Bratt’s night with a single from Grant McCray, a walk to Basabe and a sacrifice bunt from Christian Koss. Pinch hitter Drew Gilbert then drew a walk off reliever Gerardo Carrillo to load the bases. Devers punched an RBI single through for the lead. Eldridge followed with a two-run single and a 4-1 cushion.

Bratt (1-3) allowed three runs on three hits across 4 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out two.

Yunior Marte made his major league debut for the Giants after a promotion from Double-A Richmond and held Arizona to one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. Reiver Sanmartin (2-0) replaced him with two outs in the fifth and struck out Lars Nootbaar, the hero of Game 1, to earn the win after facing a single batter.

What it changes in the wild-card race

The clubs traded runs in the seventh. Gilbert walked for a second straight time and scored. He walked and scored again in a two-run eighth, with Devers and Eldridge driving in both. Carson Seymour and Dylan Smith shut Arizona down over the last two innings.

The split still helped the Diamondbacks. San Diego lost at Tampa Bay, which moved Arizona into a virtual tie with the Padres for the National League’s third wild-card spot. Ildemaro Vargas collected two hits for the visitors. Both teams take a rare Sunday off.
