Wild scenes in St. Louis as Ivon Herrera delivers for the Cardinals in the 10th

The St. Louis Cardinals have built their reputation this season on finding a way in tight games, and Tuesday night against the Pirates at Busch Stadium was no exception. Despite going hitless in his first four trips, Ivon Herrera picked the perfect time to get hot. In the 10th inning, the designated hitter launched a three-run homer to seal a dramatic 9-6 win and spark wild celebrations on the field.

Four homers cover up the mistakes

It was far from a flawless night for St. Louis. Usually sharp on the basics, the club made two defensive errors and got caught stealing twice. But the Cardinals’ power carried the load. Along with Herrera’s knockout blow, rookie JJ Wetherholt belted his ninth homer of the year, with Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman also going deep. “We made mistakes, but finding a way to win anyway is what good teams do,” manager Oliver Marmol said.

Nolan Gorman rides to the rescue for his old friend

On the mound, starter Matthew Liberatore looked set for a dream night when he matched his career high in strikeouts by the fourth inning. But it all went south in the fifth, when he gave up four runs to the Pirates. In a fitting twist, it was childhood friend Nolan Gorman who bailed him out in the sixth, smashing a towering 437-foot homer to put the Cardinals back in front. It’s a familiar story for the pair, who have been linked since their minor league days.

Total control over Pittsburgh

Even after the Pirates clawed back to level the score in the ninth, Herrera’s extra-inning blast settled the contest. The win keeps the Cardinals perfect at 5-0 against their division rivals this season. With a resilient clubhouse and a lineup deep enough to produce a different hero almost every night, St. Louis is making it clear it plans to be right in the mix in the National League Central race.
