Six runs off the Bronx bullpen
Brent Headrick had allowed a run in only 11 of his 67 previous outings this season. The eighth inning ended that streak in about four minutes.
Yainer Diaz opened it with a fastball he pulled into the short porch in right, a solo shot that tied the game at six. Jeremy Pena singled. Then Yordan Alvarez got a sinker low and inside and lined it out to the right-center warning track. Pena scored. Houston led 7-6 and never gave it back.
Isaac Paredes added an RBI single off Headrick before the inning was done. Diaz came back in the ninth with another run-scoring knock, this one off rookie Bradley Hanner. Six runs against the New York bullpen, and a 9-7 Astros win overnight at Yankee Stadium.

Alvarez keeps climbing
Alvarez finished 3 for 5 and pushed his batting average to .323, the best mark in the majors. The triple was the seventh of his big league career and his first since July 21, 2024, which tells you plenty about how often the man runs anywhere.
Diaz hit two solo homers on the night. Daulton Varsho drove in two with a pair of singles. Pena had already gone deep off Fernando Cruz in the sixth to level the score at five.
Bryan Abreu picked up the win at 5-3, giving up an RBI single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. before closing the inning with a double play and a sharp pick at first base against Austin Wells. Josh Hader recorded four outs for his 19th save in 19 chances.
A four-hit night wasted
Luis Garcia Jr. did everything New York could ask of him. Four hits, a two-run homer in the fifth off rookie starter Ethan Packo, and an RBI double off Steven Okert that put the Yankees ahead 6-5. It was his third four-hit game of the season and the eighth of his career, and it counted for nothing. Cody Bellinger also broke a 32-game homerless run with a three-run shot in the third.
Packo, pitching on his 24th birthday, was charged with five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Will Warren gave New York five innings of three-run ball, two of them earned. Houston has taken six of its last 15 games, and owner Jim Crane has confirmed that Joe Espada stays on as manager through the end of the season. Peter Lambert starts for the Astros on Wednesday night.
