Golf: Michael Brennan edges Baycurrent Classic by one shot

Brennan shakes off a bogey at 10

Michael Brennan did not look comfortable for a stretch on Sunday in Yokohama. He bogeyed the 10th, said afterward he was frustrated and “could have handled it a little bit better”, and still walked off the Baycurrent Classic with the trophy.

The 24-year-old closed with a 68 for 16-under 268, one stroke clear of Keith Mitchell and Jacob Bridgeman. His answer to the bogey came fast: birdies at 11 and 12, then six straight pars to the house at Yokohama Country Club. Nothing flashy. Just no more mistakes.

Bridgeman’s five-footer slides by

The chase was close to the end. Mitchell shot 68 and Bridgeman 69, and Bridgeman had the clearest shot at a playoff. He stood over a five-foot birdie putt on the 17th that would have tied Brennan for the lead. It missed. “I was in defensive mode a lot,” Bridgeman said.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele also had a say in the finish. He shot 67 but made a double bogey at the 18th and tied for fourth at 13-under. “I definitely played good enough golf to win this tournament,” he said. Adam Scott, a name PGA Tour fans have followed all week in Japan, carded a 72 and tied for 13th at 11-under.

A third career win for Brennan

The result adds to a season that keeps getting better for Brennan. He won the Wyndham Championship in August for his second victory of the year and the third of his career, after taking the Bank of Utah Championship last season. A one-shot margin over two players, with the defending champion lurking behind them, is a different kind of test from a front-running finish, and he passed it.
