Two goals in five minutes, then nothing
Indiana Vassilev put Philadelphia ahead in the 11th minute at Subaru Park. He used to play for the club he had just scored against. Miami needed a quarter of an hour to answer, and Lionel Messi did the answering twice over.
First came the pass. Messi lifted a cross over the Philadelphia back line, Luis Suarez headed it down from the left side of the box, and Daniel Pinter tapped in from close range. The 19-year-old was promoted from Inter Miami’s second team earlier this season and had never scored in MLS. Five minutes later Messi curled a finish past three defenders from tight space and silenced a sellout crowd. Miami led 2-1 at the break.

Philadelphia owned the second half
The Union came out of the tunnel and took the game over. Neil Pierre, an 18-year-old Haitian American defender who stands 6-foot-7, headed in from close range in the 58th minute off a Milan Iloski cross that followed a free kick. Philadelphia finished with 17 shots to Miami’s five, six on target to three. They never found the third.
Messi’s goal was his 13th of the MLS season, tied for second in the Golden Boot race and one behind Petar Musa of FC Dallas. He has nine assists in 17 league games. It was also his first goal since returning from the World Cup break.
Behind him, Dayne St. Clair started for the first time since that break. Miami signed the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in the off-season and coach Guillermo Hoyos went back to him for a Philadelphia side that lives on crosses.
Red cards, and a road that keeps narrowing
The 12th minute of stoppage time turned ugly. Ian Fray and Quinn Sullivan tangled and went down together, Yannick Bright stepped in, and Quinn’s 16-year-old brother Cavan sprinted over to join it. Bright and Cavan Sullivan both saw straight red. Quinn collected a yellow.
Union interim coach Ryan Richter put the blame on Fray and said his club would look to appeal Cavan’s dismissal. “He grabs a guy’s shirt and gets punched in the head,” Richter said.
Miami have gone four games without a win and sit seven points behind Eastern Conference leader Nashville. They have shipped 15 goals across six August matches. Bright serves his suspension Saturday when Toronto visit, though German Berterame is expected back after six games in concussion protocol.
