Twenty-four completions, twenty-four straight
Darian Mensah opened the game by completing his first 24 passes. No misses, no wobble. It was the second-best start to a single game in FBS history.
The record belongs to Dominique Davis, who strung together 26 completions for East Carolina in 2011. Mensah got close, but not quite there. He finished 30-of-34 for 220 yards and three touchdowns in Miami’s 33-20 win in Winston-Salem.
The streak stretches beyond this game too. Including the end of the previous outing, the Hurricanes quarterback has now hit 35 straight passes. Davis still holds that mark as well, by just one.

Toney steps up again, Cristobal hits 100
Malachi Toney was Mensah’s go-to target all night. 12 catches, 114 yards, one touchdown. The receiver keeps proving he’s the focal point of an attack that isn’t looking to blow teams away deep, just pile up the short gains and keep moving. Mensah’s numbers say plenty: 220 yards on 34 attempts, or less than seven yards per throw.
The night also carried a milestone for Mario Cristobal. The Miami coach picked up the 100th win of his career. Not bad going for a man who has built a reputation on hard edges and steady progress, and who now has an unbeaten team to show for it.
The Hurricanes are 3-0, with two wins in the Atlantic Coast Conference. That puts them right in the conference title picture from the off.
Wake Forest still moved the ball
The scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story. Wake Forest threw a lot more than Miami did. Gio Lopez went 29-of-46 for 312 yards and three touchdowns. He actually threw for more yards per pass than Miami.
The problem was everything else. Lopez also tossed an interception, his completion rate was well below Mensah’s, and all that volume still didn’t turn into enough points. The Demon Deacons fall to 2-1, with no conference win yet.
It’s the same old story when teams are forced to chase the game. Wake Forest had to throw because it had no choice.
