Tennis: Medvedev closes in on a Turin ticket

Medvedev’s Almaty title moves him up the Race

Daniil Medvedev defended his Almaty crown last week, and the 250 points that came with it lifted him to 3,660 in the ATP Race to Turin. That makes him fifth, according to L’Équipe’s tally. The projected qualification line is 4,030, so he still needs roughly 370 more points across the final stretch of the season.

Flavio Cobolli is right behind on 3,640 after reaching the Lyon semi-finals. Arthur Fils is seventh on 3,425 following his own semi-final run in Brussels, and Frances Tiafoe holds eighth on 3,380 even though he sat out last week.

Three names are already through

Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton have banked enough points to be safe. Jannik Sinner is second in the Race on 7,950, but his announced withdrawal means the player in ninth takes his place in Turin. Eight players qualify when the last ATP event before the Finals ends, and a 2026 Grand Slam champion ranked between ninth and 20th would displace the eighth qualifier.

Rafael Jodar is ninth on 3,159 after resting last week. The Spaniard plays Basel in a deep draw. Alex De Minaur is 10th on 2,880 and probably needs a Vienna final plus an early Jodar exit to stay alive. Novak Djokovic is 11th on 2,840 and would likely have to win Basel. Taylor Fritz, despite reaching the Lyon final, looks to be out of the picture.

Vienna, Basel, then Paris

Zverev, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Cobolli, Tiafoe and De Minaur are in Vienna this week. Shelton, Fils, Jodar, Djokovic and Fritz are in Basel. The Paris Masters, from November 2 to 8, is the last Masters 1000 of the year and should hand out the final tickets for the Finals, which run November 15 to 22 in Turin.
