Ligue 1: Mbaye admits the pressure he piled on himself at PSG

1242 minutes at 18, and the weight of expectation

The numbers tell the story of a strong season. 31 matches in all competitions, 1242 minutes on the pitch, 3 goals and 2 assists. At 18, in the PSG squad, Ibrahim Mbaye got a level of game time that very few players his age ever see at that level.

But the reality felt a lot tougher. In an interview aired on Cheikh Footstyle, likely recorded before his transfer, the Senegalese winger looks back on his spell in Paris with striking honesty.

“At PSG, things didn’t always go the way I wanted. I put a kind of pressure on myself that I didn’t need.”

The dressing room as a warped mirror

The most revealing part comes when he talks about his team-mates. Mbaye names them one by one and lays out a mindset plenty of young players know all too well, even if they rarely say it out loud.

“I was looking at the big players, the Ballon d’Or, Desire (Doue), Bradley (Barcola), Goncalo (Ramos)… and I was thinking: ‘I’ve got to do better than them.’ But that’s not the kind of pressure you should have. You just have to play your own game. The more you train and play with them, the more you learn because they’re top players with more experience.”

The logic is easy enough. Putting it into practice is another matter entirely. Trying to measure yourself every day against an attacking unit of that quality can warp the standards of a player who has only just come out of the academy.

Aston Villa offers a fresh start

The move was as much about the mind as the football. Mbaye wanted guaranteed minutes, something Luis Enrique could not promise in a squad that deep. Aston Villa paid around 55m euros to persuade him to cross the Channel.

He arrives in England having tasted a World Cup with Senegal and carrying Paris behind him as a lesson, not a failure. Now it’s over to the Premier League to decide what to make of that.
