A hundred and forty goals. That is the wall.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 140 times in 183 Champions League matches. Both marks are the competition record, and on Tuesday night two men took another step towards them. Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring after a Yann Bisseck error in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Inter. Erling Haaland scored twice in Porto as Manchester City won 2-0.
Those goals shifted more than the standings. Since the Champions League took its current name in 1992, both forwards now sit inside the competition’s top seven scorers.

Mbappe’s problem is not finishing, it is fixtures
The Frenchman shares fifth place with Raul on 51 goals. What separates them is the games played: 99 against 142. Mbappe scores once every 112.4 minutes, the sixth-best rate among the 27 players to reach 30 goals in the tournament.
Ronaldo’s rate was 113.9 minutes. Practically the same. Which reduces the record chase to arithmetic: Mbappe needs to approach 183 appearances, and he is 84 short.
The new format helps. Any club in the league phase gets at least eight matches, up to 17 if it reaches the final. Run the maths and Mbappe could theoretically clear those 84 games in five seasons and take the record in a 2030-31 final, though that assumes his club navigates the play-off round and goes all the way five years running. Add two seasons for realism and he gets there at 34.
Haaland scores faster than anyone ever has
Twelve goals further back sits a number nobody has matched: 59 goals in 59 matches, one every 79.7 minutes. Messi, the closest anyone has come, averaged 105.3.
Haaland needs 82 more appearances. The obstacle is not the player. Manchester City have not passed the quarter-finals since winning it in 2022-23 and went out in the play-off round in 2024-25. On a baseline of 12 European games a season, that is 6.83 seasons, which lands the record somewhere around the second leg of the last 16 in 2033-34.
He is 26. Mbappe is 27. Time is one of the few things the Norwegian holds over him.
