Maxime Dupe heads home as Nantes look to rebuild
Football has a funny way of coming full circle. Moves away that had to happen, detours that led nowhere in particular, then the moment everything swings back to where it started. For Maxime Dupe, Wednesday felt a bit like that. Six years after leaving La Joneliere, the keeper developed by FC Nantes is back at the club he calls home, but this time with a very different job to the one he left behind.
The Canaries have confirmed the signing of the 33-year-old goalkeeper on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year. It is no throwaway move at a club that is rebuilding after relegation to Ligue 2.

A son of the club comes back
To get a sense of this signing, you have to wind the clock back years. Before Toulouse, before Clermont, before Nice. Before the other stops, and the miles racked up across the French game.
Maxime Dupe is first and foremost a Nantes product. He joined the club young, climbed through the academy step by step and turned professional in 2012. From 2011 to 2020, his story was written in yellow and green, even if it never quite reached the scale he might have hoped for.
Like so many homegrown players, he had to leave to get minutes, experience and a different sort of standing. His path took him to Toulouse, then on to other projects where he proved his reliability and his professionalism. Enough to build a solid career and earn respect across the French game.
Now he returns as an experienced goalkeeper, more seasoned, better equipped and, crucially, arriving in a setting where he could be central.

Nantes are hunting for a response
The picture has changed since he left.
Nantes are no longer preparing for life in the top flight. They are mounting a comeback. Relegated to Ligue 2 after a painful season, the Canaries now have one target: get back where they believe they belong, and do it fast.
In that kind of fight, experienced heads matter. Even more so in a position as important as goalkeeper.
Dupe fits the brief. He arrives on a free after his spell at OGC Nice, where he was mainly a backup, and he knows the Nantes environment inside out.
Beyond the football, his presence should matter in a dressing room that has to swallow relegation and handle the pressure of a season where every mistake will be picked apart.
The search for Anthony Lopes’s replacement is on
This return also fills a big hole.
For the last 18 months, Anthony Lopes had been Nantes’s number one. His move to Angers forced the club’s hierarchy to find a dependable answer, someone who could shoulder the responsibility straight away.
Dupe ticks plenty of boxes. He knows the club, he knows the demands of the top level and he has enough experience to steady a squad that will need backbone from day one.
Now it is about turning a nice story into something more useful: results.
On paper, the reunion between Nantes and their former keeper has all the makings of the perfect script. But in a League 2 that never does what it is supposed to, sentiment will count for very little. Saves, points and wins will do the talking.
One thing is certain: for Maxime Dupe, the road has brought him right back to where it all began. And sometimes the best stories are the ones that pick up where they left off.
