Seven million, a sell-on slice, and a way back
Sky Italia broke it late in the day. Cagliari and Inter Milan have agreed terms on a loan move for Yanis Massolin, and the young French midfielder is set to spend the rest of the season in Sardinia.
A few details were still being tied up when the news landed. The paperwork should be done within hours, before the Italian window slams shut.
The aim is the obvious one for a player his age: minutes in a Serie A dressing room less crowded than Inter’s, and a run of games long enough to prove something.
Try it for $0.99.
Inter kept every escape route open
The structure is where this gets interesting. Cagliari have a purchase option set at 7 million euros, so they can keep him beyond June if he delivers.
Inter are not walking away, though. The Nerazzurri wrote in a 10% sell-on clause and a buy-back option. Put simply: if Massolin kicks on in Sardinia, Milan can pull him back, and if Cagliari cash in later, Inter take a cut.
Italy’s big clubs have turned this into a template for their academy players. Send them out, keep the legal hooks in, lose nothing either way. The sporting risk moves down the table while the financial upside stays at San Siro.
Contracts do not win over a head coach
Now comes the part no clause can cover. A well-built loan guarantees nothing once the whistle goes, and a 20-year-old midfielder still has to convince the man picking the team.
Nothing is official. The report comes from Sky Italia and neither club has confirmed a word of it yet.
