A “mutual decision” after a long slide
Maryland and head coach Mike Locksley are done. The school announced Wednesday that Locksley stepped down in what it called a mutual decision, with the Terrapins stuck in a 12-game Big Ten losing streak. They have not won a conference game since a 27-10 victory at Wisconsin on Sept. 20, 2025.
Athletic director Jim Smith said “a coaching change was in the best interest of Coach Locksley and the Maryland football program.” Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim takes over as interim coach for the rest of the season.

The record behind the exit
Locksley leaves with a 39-54 mark since 2019, including a perfect 3-0 in bowl games. He also had a six-game interim stint in 2015. The recent numbers tell the real story: his teams went 10-21 from the start of 2024. This season Maryland sits at 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten.
The end came quickly. Locksley fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino on Sunday after a 37-30 home loss to Rutgers, the team’s fifth straight defeat. Three days later he was gone himself.
The cost and what comes next
Locksley earns $6.4 million this season on a contract that runs through 2028. According to ESPN, Maryland owes him a buyout of just under $10 million. Abdul-Rahim gets his first game in charge on Oct. 31, when Illinois visits.
