Ligue 1: Marseille survive Le Havre fightback after 4-0 lead

Four goals up, then a scare

Marseille looked finished with the job by the 55th minute at the Vélodrome on Sunday. CJ Egan-Riley headed in from a corner after five minutes for his first league goal in an OM shirt. Timothy Weah beat three defenders on a solo run before the break, and after it Igor Paixão and Himad Abdelli made it 4-0 within five minutes.

Then Le Havre, bottom of Ligue 1 and still waiting for a first win, turned the evening upside down. Josh Maja scored a penalty in the 77th minute after Weah pulled back Fofana in the box. L. N’Diaye finished from close range in the 86th. Maja added a diving header from a free kick in the 89th, with a deflection off Egan-Riley, and it was 4-3.

A handball shout in stoppage time

Seven minutes were added, and Marseille spent most of them defending their own box. Le Havre piled in crosses, and in the 90+6 minute a shot from Mizuta struck Tochukwu Nnadi at close range. The visitors screamed for a penalty. Referee Clément Turpin was called to the pitchside monitor by the VAR, watched the replay, and ruled there was no punishable handball.

Mizuta had one more chance and sent a hard shot over the bar. That was the last real moment of the game.

What it means for both clubs

It is Marseille’s third straight league win. They started the day in 10th place after a run of five defeats, and they are now three points off the podium. The reaction mattered after a 1-0 defeat at Sturm Graz in the Europa League on Thursday, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg returned to the starting XI.

For Didier Digard’s Le Havre the table is harsher. They sit on two points, last, with no league win in eight games and an away record that was already among the weakest in the division.
