The bill for a night in Bruges, eight months late
Flares in Belgium last January. The punishment lands in September, in Istanbul. Olympique de Marseille will travel to Besiktas on 17 September with no away support, according to ICI Provence, which broke the story on Tuesday morning. Kick-off is set for 9pm CET.
Nothing recent triggered this. UEFA handed Marseille a suspended two-year sanction after the fireworks at Club Brugge, the usual mechanism that leaves a club free to breathe as long as nothing else goes wrong. Something else went wrong. The suspension was activated in the weeks that followed the Belgian trouble.
So the away end in Turkey stays empty because of a bill nobody closed in the winter.

Two defeats in three, and now this
Marseille did not need the news. They come into the European campaign off a rough opening in Ligue 1: two losses in three games, the most recent one at home to newly promoted Paris FC, 2-3. Dropping points at the Velodrome that early puts the staff under a spotlight nobody enjoys.
A European away night is normally the escape hatch in a run like that. New competition, clean slate, a hostile stadium and a squad forced to close ranks. Istanbul had all of it.
Except the part that mattered most. Marseille’s travelling support is among the most mobile in Europe and the Besiktas trip had been circled since the draw. Besiktas fill the Tüpraş Stadyumu with one of the loudest crowds on the continent, and now they get to do it unopposed.
What an empty away end actually costs
Not much you can measure. No study puts a number on the goals a travelling section is worth. The psychological side is harder to wave away for a group already short on belief, walking into a stadium where every voice belongs to the opposition.
Marseille open their European season alone in there. Whether that hardens them or hollows them out is the question the staff will be sitting with for the next nine days.
