Ligue 1: Marseille demote Abdallah after the Le Havre scare

Genesio draws a line

Marseille won 4-3 against Le Havre on Sunday night, and their coach still left the stadium angry. Bruno Genesio criticized the attitude of several young players who came off the bench, asking for “humility” on Ligue 1+ and again in his press conference.

Now there are consequences. According to La Provence, forward Keyliane Abdallah, 20, has been demoted to the reserve side, Pro2. RMC Sport adds that the staff had been unhappy with his recent performances, including in the Europa League at Graz and against Le Havre, and with an attitude described as a little too relaxed. The decision was not only about his cameo on Sunday.

Moumbagna and Kamissoko in the frame

Abdallah is not the only name. Faris Moumbagna, 26, was recently asked to play with the reserves too, even though he still trains with the senior group. The staff were unhappy with his physical level after a disappointing appearance against Olympiacos, and see the reserve minutes as a way to rebuild fitness. The Cameroonian forward reportedly did not love the call.

Nouhoum Kamissoko, 21, got a talking to in the dressing room but no formal punishment. His effort had not been questioned before Sunday, but he believed he deserved a start despite the return of Højbjerg.

RMC says the pattern runs deeper. Marseille could not recruit this season, so the pecking order was redrawn, and some youngsters have pushed to claim a role too quickly. That impatience has sometimes gone down badly in the dressing room, which is why Genesio chose to speak so openly after a win that was far tighter than a 4-0 lead suggested.
