Miami finally ends the misery
Twelve games. That was the weight Miami had been dragging around since July 9. On this night it lifted, and it lifted in the loudest way possible. The Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7, snapping a franchise-record losing streak with a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth.
Griffin Conine delivered the swing that ended it. A single through the middle after a three-run rally, and the Florida dugout emptied. Conine and Heriberto Hernandez had both gone yard earlier, two bats heating up at the exact moment the club needed them.

A ninth inning that refused to end quietly
Down 7-5 with three outs to work with, Miami started chipping away. Jakob Marsee lined a single to center. Otto Lopez reached behind him. Then Jhoan Duran, on to close it out for Philadelphia, plunked Kyle Stowers and loaded the bases.
That brought up Hernandez. His single to center tied the game and flipped the whole night. Duran had blown just one save all year. He picked the worst possible moment for his second wobble, and Conine made him pay.
Philadelphia had looked comfortable early. Bryce Harper turned on a two-run homer to stake the lead, and for a while it held. Zack Wheeler could not protect it. Five runs in three innings, his roughest start of the season, and the door was left wide open.
Where this leaves both clubs
Seven losses in their last 10 since the All-Star break. That is the Phillies now, sliding at the wrong time. Miami wakes up somewhere different this morning, still buried in the standings but no longer bleeding.
