MLB: Mariners bounce back a day after historic 22-0 loss

Twenty-four hours later

22-0. The worst defeat in Mariners history, 50 years of the franchise, suffered Tuesday night in Milwaukee.

Last night, Seattle answered. In a very different way.

Four runs in the first inning. Dominic Canzone drove a two-run double to left after hits from Brendan Donovan and Randy Arozarena. Two walks later, Taylor Ward brought in two more runners.

Dustin May never recovered. Three more runs in the second, a sacrifice fly from Julio Rodriguez, a two-run single from Josh Naylor. The Brewers starter was done after two innings, charged with seven runs on seven hits.

7-0. In two innings.

Ortiz sparks Milwaukee, but too late

The Brewers never went away. Joey Ortiz launched a two-run homer close to 390 feet into the left-centre seats, his seventh of the season. He finished with four RBIs, matching his career high.

Milwaukee chipped away. One run in the sixth on an Ortiz sacrifice fly. Two more in the eighth against Seranthony Dominguez, including another Ortiz single.

7-5. And then nothing.

The problem is in the numbers: 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Too many men left on base. The three-game winning streak ended there.

Gilbert holds, Munoz shuts it down

Logan Gilbert got the job done. Five-plus innings, three runs, four hits, four walks, five strikeouts. His 10th win of the season against seven losses.

Andres Munoz handled the ninth in order. Save No. 23.

Josh Naylor finished with three hits and two RBIs. Seattle picked up its third win in four games. Tuesday night will go into the record books. It left no scars.
