Premier League : Manchester City shell out 135 M€ for Elliot Anderson, the summer’s big bet

City opens the chequebook for a name not yet a global one

Manchester City have landed a major blow in the transfer market. The English club have confirmed the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth an estimated 135 M€. At 23, the England midfielder becomes one of the priciest signings in Premier League history and, so far, the most expensive move of this summer window.

It’s not the flashiest name in football. Not yet. But City have slapped a huge price tag on his back. Anderson is stepping into another world now, where every touch, every average game and every miss in the big moments will be judged through the lens of that fee.

And in Manchester, nobody pays that kind of money for a squad player.

A medical done in the middle of the World Cup

The timing says plenty about how serious this is. Currently away with England at the 2026 World Cup, Elliot Anderson used a brief break in the United States to complete his medical in Kansas. City and Nottingham Forest have an agreement in place, and the final paperwork will be wrapped up when the player returns to England.

City’s statement was brief, but the message was clear: Anderson is already being treated as a City player. The club wished him luck with the Three Lions before welcoming him into his new home.

A home that looks nothing like Nottingham.

A move that changes everything for Anderson

The England midfielder’s career has just taken a sharp turn. Developed at Newcastle, sold to Nottingham Forest two years ago for around 40 M€, Anderson has exploded at the City Ground to the point where the Magpies will be kicking themselves. At the time, Newcastle had to work around Premier League financial rules. Now they are probably looking at this deal with a very sour taste.

Anderson has grown into something else. This season, despite Forest’s miserable campaign, which ended in 16th place, he held the midfield together across 38 matches, scoring 4 goals and adding 4 assists. Not superstar attacking numbers, but his presence, his running, his bite and his ability to carry the ball, recycle it and break lines have made him stand out.

A proper box-to-box midfielder. And that’s exactly the sort of player the big English clubs love.

City win the English battle

Manchester United had his name on their list. Newcastle were also keeping tabs on their former player. But it was Manchester City who were the most aggressive, the most convincing and, crucially, the most willing to meet Nottingham Forest’s demands.

After two opening bids were turned down, City finally got to the number Forest wanted. At that fee, the club aren’t just buying talent. They’re buying someone they expect to become a cornerstone, a midfielder who can define the next cycle.

The future City side under Enzo Maresca is taking shape with a spectacular move. And it is a signing that raises eyebrows as much as it impresses. Anderson still has very little top-level European experience. He has around 150 senior appearances, but only two Champions League outings. The step up is enormous.

A price tag that piles on the pressure

This is the big issue. 135 M€ leaves no room for grey areas. Anderson is instantly a player under the microscope. Age, potential and work rate all count for very little at that price: the expectations will be immediate.

He’ll be thrown into the same conversation as the biggest transfers in football history, with Neymar, Mbappe and Isak now joined by Anderson when people talk about outrageous fees. The profiles may be totally different, but the number alone creates the story.

The question is simple: has City beaten everyone to a future elite midfielder, or overpaid for a player still being built after only one full season under the brightest lights?

The profile fits what City want to become

From a football point of view, it makes sense. Anderson brings energy, intensity, a real ability to break forward and that mix of aggression and control modern managers crave. In a side built to press high, dominate transitions and keep the midfield moving, his skill set could be valuable.

He’s not just a ball-winner. He can drive forward, join attacks, close spaces and set the tempo. That’s what persuaded City to go this far.

Now comes the hard part: fitting into a squad where competition never sleeps, standards are relentless and one good performance is never enough.

A huge gamble, but one they are standing by

Manchester City have just written the biggest cheque of the summer. Elliot Anderson, meanwhile, has gone from a highly respected Premier League midfielder to one of the most talked-about transfers in world football.

His talent is real. So is his room to grow. But the new fee changes everything.

At Nottingham, he had space to develop. In Manchester, he’ll need to justify the money almost straight away.

City have made their call.

Elliot Anderson is in the spotlight now. The next job is staying there.
