Ninety minutes on the clock at Craven Cottage, and Manchester United had nothing. Then Matheus Cunha found a yard of space.
The Brazilian’s late finish salvaged a 1-1 draw on Sunday after an afternoon in which United were second best almost everywhere on the pitch. Lisandro Martinez had already turned the ball into his own net to hand Fulham the lead, and for long spells United looked incapable of answering. They pushed. Nothing came. Marco Silva’s side defended the box well and invited the visitors to try something clever, which they mostly could not.
One point, then, instead of none. That distinction matters more to United right now than the performance does.

Five points, 12th place, and a manager under the microscope
Michael Carrick arrived in London on the back of a defeat to Brighton and a midweek exit from the League Cup. Two losses in a row. The trip to Fulham was never going to be the place to relax.
His side now sits 12th with five points, which is nowhere near the territory the club talked itself into during the summer. Manchester City went top on the same afternoon, a detail nobody at Old Trafford will have enjoyed.
Fulham are 19th and just let two home points evaporate in stoppage time. Leading a game and then conceding at the death does something particular to a squad already low on belief. Silva knows it.
Spring will remember this afternoon
United are stuck in mid-table and the teams above them are not waiting around. Carrick needs a run of results, not another gritty point away from home.
Fulham are in survival mode in September, which is early even by their standards. Every dropped home point gets counted twice in April.
