Premier League: Mac Allister left “very, very sad” by Liverpool

Two years left, and no new deal on the table

Two team-mates got improved terms this summer. Alexis Mac Allister did not, and he said so out loud today in the press conference before Atletico Madrid visit Anfield.

“As everyone knows, I found out the club were not able to offer me a new contract, and that makes me very, very sad.” Blunt, from a player who has never given Liverpool a difficult day off the pitch. He still has two years to run.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were the two who got theirs. No bitterness from the Argentine about that. “I’m very happy for them because they deserve it, but at the same time I’m a bit sad not to have got mine.”

He nearly left in August

The 27-year-old confirmed the rumour that circulated late in the window. “There was a chance to leave this summer.” He stayed. Andoni Iraola has started him in both Premier League games since, which makes the message from the dressing room a good deal warmer than the one from upstairs.

That gap matters for a player of his standing. Signed from Brighton in the summer of 2023, Mac Allister became one of the load-bearing pieces of the Reds midfield, with the 2025 Premier League title on his CV. He won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina too, then lost the 2026 final to Spain this summer.

The clock is the real problem

He promised to keep giving everything: “The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my all until my last day here.” Fine. But once a contract slips inside its final 18 months, foreign clubs can start talking to him directly.

Liverpool have a season to decide, or to accept selling an Argentina international for less than he is worth. Atletico first.
