A tune-up in Bamberg that did Lyon good
Ten days before a Champions League third qualifying round tie at Sparta Prague, Olympique Lyonnais did not need fireworks. They needed a clean, convincing shift to wash away the taste of the Slavia Prague defeat. They got it. On a scruffy pitch at Bamberg’s Fuchs-Park-Stadion, Paulo Fonseca’s side saw off Wolfsburg 2-0, and the night gave them more than three friendly points. A win, the return of Malick Fofana, a grown-up performance, Lyon flew home with plenty to like.

Even at 0-0, Lyon looked the likelier
It had the trappings of a July friendly. Small ground, a few hundred fans, sunshine, and a surface that had seen better days. None of it stopped Lyon settling fast.
The opening chance came from a driving run by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, whose cross picked out Kaïl Boudache. The winger skewed his effort over. Morton then dragged a long-range strike wide. Wolfsburg replied at once, Robert Glatzel somehow ballooning a free shot from the penalty spot over the bar.
Julien Duranville nearly settled it moments later, his shot thumping the crossbar after another tidy visiting move.
Lyon bossed the ball without cashing in, and Dominik Greif stayed busy at the other end. The keeper turned away efforts from Vinicius Souza and Fabien Reese to keep things level in an even half.
The swing came right before the interval. Yannick Gerhardt hauled down Remi Himbert as he broke clear and walked for it. A man up, Lyon had the game reshaped in their favour.

Maitland-Niles cashes in the pressure
Fonseca reshuffled after the restart without losing the thread. Remy Descamps, on between the posts, was tested early and coped.
Lyon pressed on, which made sense against ten men with gaps to attack. Himbert went close from a lovely Morton pass. The goal was coming.
It landed in the 67th minute. Duranville produced his pace and trickery once more, his curler pushed out by the German keeper, but Maitland-Niles had gambled on exactly that. The England defender swept in left-footed. Lyon led, and they had earned it, the reward for being braver, more patient and in charge of the tempo against a side wilting in front of them.
Fofana back, and straight into the thick of it
The best news of the night was not on the scoreboard. After weeks sidelined, Malick Fofana was back out there. Fonseca will have watched with a smile, because so much of his plan leans on the young Belgian’s directness.
And this was no cameo for the sake of it. Deep into stoppage time Fofana slid into a flowing move, collected it wide, found Orel Mangala, and the cross let Tanner Tessmann nod it cleverly back across for Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez to tuck away. 2-0, game done.
The goal read like a summary of Lyon’s summer. Kids growing into it, new faces bedding in, senior heads chipping in the know-how at the right beat.

The real exam is still to come
It was not flawless. Set pieces still need work and the finishing has to sharpen once the points are live.
But the brief was met. Beaten by Slavia Prague, Lyon wanted their belief back, and this Wolfsburg result hands it to them.
Four wins in five for pre-season, OL head into a last friendly against Real Betis calmer than they were seven days ago. The bigger picture is already August 4 and the trek to Sparta Prague.
The test is nearly here. This proves nothing on its own, yet it hints Fonseca’s team is pointing the right way with the season almost upon them.
